Wrapping up his “Eirlandia” trilogy perhaps a little too neatly, Lawhead offers a tale that should satisfy his fans but is unlikely to garner him new ones.
In the sweeping style of George R.R. Martin and J.R. Tolkien, Lawhead has created a diverse universe and rich cast of characters. Multiple story lines weave to form a satisfying ending to this mythological speculative series. Aficionados of R.A. Salvatore, Connie Willis, and Eric Flint may appreciate these books.
The convoluted plots and numerous characters make this fantasy series difficult to jump into for new readers, but Lawhead has a devoted following who will want this.
Lawhead’s intricately plotted, compelling tale continues to demonstrate his mastery of world building. Although he slows the action in the beginning with too much backstory, readers who hang in there will be richly rewarded. Fans of Melanie Dobson should give this series a try.
Once again, Lawhead has penned an epic tale, putting a new spin on an old legend. Full of rich imagery, this page-turner will appeal to fans of suspense and fantasy, although some readers may be dissuaded by its length.
