Ever since the privileged Trevor McDonough bested her for a college scholarship, Kate Livingston has resented him. Now after graduating from Harvard University as a physician, the insufferable Trevor offers Kate, who holds a menial position at the Census Bureau in Washington, DC, a job assisting him as he cares for tuberculosis (TB) patients while trying to find a cure. They become close, and Kate fears losing him to the disease that has killed her two brothers and husband. Faith in their love and spiritual courage may be the only things Trevor and Kate have to go on, but it may not be enough to keep them together. This story is loosely based on a memoir by Edward Trudeau, a pioneer in the research and eradication of TB at the turn of the 20th century.
VERDICT RITA, Christy, and Daphne du Maurier Award-winning author Camden (Into the Whirlwind; Against the Tide) does an excellent job of portraying the devastating scourge that was TB. Recommended for fans of historical fiction and those seeking a peek into the lives of the brave souls who dedicated themselves to finding a remedy.
