Garcia is a creative survivor who preaches the gospel of love, peace, meditation, and movement. He has experienced what so many have—hurt within his religion, which many refer to as “church hurt.” This book shares his story of growing up in church, a community in which he loved and served, but was ultimately abused and kicked out of because he questioned everything and because he knew at a young age he was gay. He shares his journey to peace and growth, and his book is intended for others who have gone on to reclaim their true selves and blossom to their greatest potential. Each chapter opens with a quote and steps to take based on the author’s own experiences and research he has conducted. Only one quote is from the Bible (I Corinthians 13: 1–3), and Garcia does not mention the verses in the Bible that specifically refer to sexual conduct, which are at the cornerstone of the conflict between him and the church.
VERDICT This work is intentional, resourceful, and a place to land, heal, and grow for those who have experienced similar circumstances to Garcia.
