The von Trapp family's story, told so lyrically in Rodgers and Hammerstein's much-loved musical The Sound of Music, is recounted in this drama based on the autobiography of eldest daughter Agathe von Trapp (1913–2010). While the musical features the "Maria" character, the focus here is on Agathe (Eliza Bennett): "I grew up in a…fairy tale house." The elderly Agathe (Rosemary Harris) recounts the family's story in flashbacks. The plot covers much of the same period as the musical does, including the family's escape from Austria during World War II and their initial success as performers.
VERDICT Fans of the musical may find this retelling a bit humdrum without the songs; however, there are times when it tugs at the heartstrings. Suitable for family viewing and public libraries.
