Cullen, an educational psychologist and parent to four adult children, has deep knowledge of parenting. Her book is devoted to parents of teenagers or soon-to-be teenagers, and professionals who work with teenagers in their practice. Cullen believes that adults can offer a lot to teenagers: life experience, love, encouragement, affirmation, role models, information, resources. She argues that parents should be congruous in their own behavior, and that being open to new ideas and cultivating creativity are keys to positive interactions with teenagers. Each teen or parent is unique, so instead of catch-all advice, Cullen promotes self-reflection and encourages parents to allow their self-reflection to direct change in their parenting. The book includes case studies to help readers better understand how to apply its suggestions and tips.
VERDICT Not every case study or suggestion will work for every child’s situation, which this book acknowledges. Cullen’s self-reflective guide will nevertheless aid parents in multiple ways.
