Inspired by Marc Wortman's 2006 book of the same name, The Millionaires' Unit is the story of a group of Yale University students who were the first to fly for the United States in World War I. Narrated by actor Bruce Dern (grandnephew of one of the aviators), this production was seven years in the making and filmed on three continents. This compelling chronicle is recounted through letters and diaries written by the unit members as well as interviews with their descendants interspersed with some amazing archival and present-day aerial footage. Much of the focus is on Trubee Davison, the group's leader and son of a JP Morgan executive, who later went on to be assistant secretary of defense and director of personnel at the CIA. However, the directors also do a solid job of sharing the stories from other key members of the group, such as Robert Lovett, "Di" Gates, and Kenney MacLeish.
VERDICT Great storytelling and inspiring protagonists combine to make this film essential for documentary lovers. Highly recommended for history and aviation buffs.
