Fabric artist Utopiano brings wearable art to the reader with her floral brooches. The book includes plans for 20 projects. While there are many detailed photos and templates, the book still feels daunting. The extensive equipment list alone may be off-putting to casual crafters. With a variety of specialized tools and materials needed, getting started may feel like an investment. But the book is highly detailed, and the templates are excellent. The suggestions for customizing patterns give plenty of room for crafters to progress and improve their skills. The breakdown of the artist’s process is fascinating, and the realism she achieves is impressive. Despite these pluses, it feels, on occasion, that something is lost in translation in the book’s structure.
VERDICT This book functions as both an art book and a how-to for crafting, which makes it an excellent inclusion in public libraries.
