Drummer Densmore (Riders on the Storm: My Life with Jim Morrison and the Doors) of the legendary 1960s rock band the Doors here chronicles the saga of a 2004 lawsuit and countersuit brought about after his former bandmates launched a tour labeled "The Doors of the 21st Century" without him and with a new lead singer, replacing the long-dead Jim Morrison. This memoir also serves as a statement about artistic legacy and protection. Densmore long resisted the use of Doors songs for commercials despite million-dollar offers and strongly defended the notion that Morrison supported the four-way split of Doors royalties, as well as equally weighted veto power for each band member. He offers vivid descriptions and quotes from the case itself as well as reflections on the formation of the band and his ideas about artistic integrity and the preservation of artistic ideals.
VERDICT While those looking for a detailed history of the band would be better served by another of the myriad books about the Doors, including Densmore's own Riders on the Storm, devoted fans will enjoy this inside look and commentary on artistic goals conflicting with commercial and historic considerations.
