Operating a rundown curiosity shop with her cantankerous father, Camille Invernesse leads a routine life until she escapes a robbery at the store and encounters apothecary Jonathan Gilchrist, who brings her home to care for her injured arm. She meets his father, a collector of curiosities, and learns that Ian Gilchrist believes that her father stole a valuable ruby known as the Bevoy. It's up to Camille and Jonathan to figure out the truth as their attraction to each other blossoms.
VERDICT Ladd, who won the 2011 Genesis Award for historical romance (A Lady at Willowgrove Hall) has written an engaging Regency with a richly detailed setting and an unpredictable suspenseful plot. Admirers of Sandra Orchard and Lis Wiehl who want to try a romance with a historical bent may enjoy this new series.
