Barbra Streisand is an actress/singer/director many readers will know and love, but the details that Stewart (James O. Freedman Professor of Letters, Univ. of Iowa; Cinemachines: An Essay on Media and Method) uncovers are aspects of her legacy that many may not have considered. Stewart meticulously examines how each of Streisand’s films have changed history and contributed to the culture of today. From the academic yet familiar style of writing, it’s clear the author has researched and loved Streisand for a very long time. Many writers are not able to achieve a personal tone to academic writing, but Stewart’s words are the result of an admiration for Streisand’s talent, career, and influence.
VERDICT This is a beautifully written examination of a star’s image and voice for fans of Streisand who want more than just biographical information. However, this book best suits an academic collection, where it will be a wonderful source for more research to come.
