Stand Your Ground

This courtroom and family drama is based on the true story of Jason Veitch, who shot a man who had been stealing construction materials from a home Veitch was building. Frustrated over the situation, Veitch staked out the building site, brought a weapon, and pinned the men to the ground. His gun accidentally discharged, fatally injuring one of the thieves. The film explores the events surrounding the shooting and its aftermath, including Veitch's trial on felony murder charges. Lengthy courtroom sequences establish the chain of events leading to the shooting and show the methodical building of a case by both the defense and the prosecution. Much of the film focuses on Veitch's mother, the deeply religious Jackie Carpenter (Francine Locke), and the crisis of faith she experiences owing to her son's plight. The production values are adequate, and the film maintains some suspense about the eventual outcome. Though the acting is stiff at times, Locke does a creditable job of portraying Carpenter's struggles. Bonus features include behind-the-scenes footage and the theatrical trailer.
