Sam’s Eats: Let’s Do Some Cooking

Way, a self-taught home cook and current social media star, debuts his first cookbook, which spotlights his personal take on comfort cooking, spiced with a generous dash of his modern culinary style. The 100 recipes, ranging from chicken fajitas to bacon mac and cheese, are divided into chapters with titles like “Weekday Meals,” “Sharing Plates,” and “Sweet Treats.” A few of the dishes have an unexpected twist, such as the addition of chopped pear to the caramelized onions that are part of Way’s grilled-cheese sandwich. Given Way’s UK roots, it isn’t surprising to find the occasional British culinary term (like toastie) in this book, not to mention British ingredients like the black treacle in his sticky toffee pudding. Metric weights and measurements are the star of the day, though Imperial weights and measurements are also provided for star-spangled cooks.
VERDICT Way serves up a solid selection of tasty recipes, delivered in an engaging Jamie Oliver style, for fans of Nick DiGiovanni’s Knife Drop or millennial and Gen Z cooks starting out in the kitchen.
