Psychologist Fitzgerald gives an easy-to-follow and encouraging blueprint for readers’ work lives. She quickly establishes that most people do now know how to have a healthy relationship to their jobs and debunks myths about work and about work/life balance. The book includes strategies for shifting or changing one’s mindset toward work, even for readers in jobs that aren’t the right fit (Fitzgerald offers things to try before quitting a job). She introduces concepts about brain function and current studies on how people are deeply affected by their work/life balance. There are plenty of opportunities throughout for reflection and activities to help identify and reframe how to approach a job or career, along with ideas for those who are currently self-employed or who want to be. Fitzgerald is mindful of those who work in offices as well as those who do shift work, and there are ample ideas on improvement for all workers up and down the organizational chart.
VERDICT This is a great read for anyone navigating the pandemic’s disruption of work; highly recommended for all collections.
