Quilter, designer, and cohost of the
Quilt Buzz podcast, Carye draws upon the corporate concepts of ideation and brainstorming to help quilters of all levels create their own designs. Photographs illustrate highly modern quilts—solid colors and lots of negative space. The quilts are based on simple, eight-inch blocks with large pieces and bold designs. Thirty blocks are presented with suggestions about which play well together, but the author leaves the choice up to readers. To demonstrate variety, multiples of one simple block are shown in several arrangements. The layouts for combining the blocks include bull’s-eye patterns, stripes, log cabin designs, and the traditional sampler. The author suggests that readers view the book as a coach or quirky sidekick that is there to encourage them to design a product that is truly their own. If readers want to replicate the book’s designs, however, there are plenty of detailed instructions to follow. There are also handy charts that calculate the yardage needed for each project.
VERDICT This is a great resource for quilters of all skill levels and for libraries that support a community of innovative artists.
