Pocket Guide to Sashiko and Boro Stitching: Carry-Along Reference to Stitches, Tools, and Projects

Landauer. Dec. 2023. 64p. ISBN 9781639810451. pap. $8.50. CRAFTS
Quiltmaker and fabric designer Cory’s (Mastering Quilt Marking) pocket guide packs an extensive amount of information into its pages without being overwhelming. Readers will learn a little history behind both traditional and modern Japanese sashiko (a functional embroidery technique that uses available resources) and boro styles (the result of that stitching). Her book includes the meanings behind some sashiko stitches, materials needed, techniques, and even a few project ideas. She often offers more than one option for techniques and materials, allowing readers to utilize options already available at their local craft stores. Numerous color photographs and visual graphics make it easy to follow and reference later. She even had the foresight to add a few photos of what to “not do,” which every crafter can appreciate. Her inclusion of sustainable practices such as patching and darning only highlights that these are not only beautiful skills to learn but also practical ones.
VERDICT For readers who want to see the potential in their used clothing, this quick guide is small but mighty. Marvelous for beginners but also ideal for people with embroidery knowledge who need some reminders while they work.
