The author is a life coach, former Marine, and cancer survivor with a podcast of the same title as the book, and her self-help book utilizes “permission slips” in place of affirmations or leaning in/girlboss mantras to help her readers remember her methods. There are exercises throughout which readers are invited to complete, and then build on that knowledge with the author’s own story of trials and challenges as she built her current career and improved her personal life. Luna advocates embracing uncertainty with faith and determination and sprinkles her Christian beliefs in as well, but not too heavily. Much of the book feels like a therapy session or workshop with a laid-back tone and practical advice for improving confidence and gaining trust in oneself, specifically naming one’s truth and cultivating the persona one needs to succeed. Additional stories from participants in her mastermind course and other friends flesh it out.
VERDICT While many books cover similar ground, this is a pleasant approach for the average person looking to make their mark. A good add-on to most collections, especially for entrepreneurial patrons.
