In 2014, the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA) released The Top Technologies Every Librarian Needs To Know. The landscape of libraries and technologies has drastically changed since then. Here, editor Varnum (Univ. of Michigan Lib.) builds upon and updates that edition, arranging chapters into four distinct yet overlapping categories—“Data,” “Services” “Repositories and Access,” and “Interoperability.” Authors address topics ranging from linked open data, the Internet of things, information visualization, virtual reality, digital humanities, digital publishing, learning tools interoperability, and machine learning. Chapters describe the past, present, and anticipated future of these technologies, particularly within library contexts, with most providing concrete examples of how the technologies are currently being used. All but one of the contributors are from academic libraries, which means that the discussion generally favors college and university institutions.
VERDICT Those looking to understand current technological trends, especially in academic libraries, will find this a valuable text. Readers seeking a more expansive discussion may also want to consult Peter D. Fernandez and Kelly Tilton’s Applying Library Values to Emerging Technology.
