Mountain Modern: Contemporary Homes in High Places

Richard Powers (photos). Thames & Hudson. 2014. 256p. ISBN 9780500517468. $35. INTERIOR DESIGN
COPY ISBN
Design writer Bradbury (The Iconic Interior; New Natural Home) examines the current trends and challenges of creating newly constructed homes in mountain settings. He visits 25 residences to explain how the architects and designers have worked with owners to accommodate their lifestyles and to take advantage of the natural setting and incorporate vernacular architecture and materials into the design. Quite a few times the designs feature a bit of a twist, as seen in the collection of buildings that make up a home on the Isle of Skye, which has cladding that mirrors the barn and outbuildings of the island rather than its white-washed homes. Powers contributes close to 400 images of interiors and landscaping, most presented with floor plans, of abodes in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
VERDICT A detailed look at contemporary domestic architecture.
