Milburn (Twelve Gems) explores economic inequality, the climate crisis, and the role an artist plays in society in this richly imagined science-fiction tale set on Lure, an oceanic paradise planet that serves as a luxurious vacation destination for Earth’s elite. Jo Sparta, a frustrated painter who makes a living designing complex holographic displays for corporations, travels to Lure after being invited to collaborate with a musician named Rachel and an animator named Chris on an installation celebrating the kickoff of an important economic summit. As the three go about their work, bond, and drift in and out of romantic entanglements, Milburn creates an eerie sense something is awry with occasional flashbacks revealing Lure’s formation by a mysterious deity and short sequences highlighting the lives of the planet’s unskilled, underpaid workforce. After Jo stumbles upon evidence of a plan for Earth’s elite to permanently relocate to Lure and leave the rest of humanity to die in a looming climate disaster, she and her friends find themselves in an existential quandary and very real danger.
VERDICT A visually stunning science fiction thriller that touches on many of the most important issues of 21st-century life.
