Los Lobos is a band that is truly one of a kind in the American popular music pantheon. Starting in the early 1970s as Mexican regional music specialists, over the years the multitalented multi-instrumentalists mastered rock, blues, country, folk, and many genres and subgenres in between. This slim volume by disc jockey/music journalist Morris, formerly
Hollywood Reporter music editor and
Billboard magazine senior editor, documents the band's 40-plus years together and does a reasonably good job of hitting the high points. Known by many casual listeners for the 1987
La Bamba movie sound track and the cover of the title song, the band's unquestioned masterpiece, the album
Kiko, was released in 1992. This is not an authorized biography, but the book does include some quotes from some of the band members.
VERDICT Los Lobos has a dedicated fan base, and this book would probably do well in all popular music collections, especially since there is no other biography yet printed about the band.
