Keuss (theology, Seattle Pacific Univ.; Freedom of the Self) embarks on a faith journey by investigating eight key questions within the biblical narrative. The author’s desire is for readers to “find that to be human is to ask more and more questions, and that deep meaning is found in the journey and pursuit of where and to whom those questions will bring us.” He cautions that “[t]rue answers that will sustain us for life’s journey require some messiness, mystery, wonder, and at times even uncertainty found in relationships with others and with God.” For example, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” requires moving beyond a vertical relationship with God to our horizontal relationship with people. Keuss draws moving portraits of Bible stories and our modern dilemmas that spur readers to think deeply about contemporary issues; his writing challenges us to be open to new ideas and beliefs.
VERDICT Will appeal to religious readers seeking a thoughtful book. Strongly recommended for academic and larger public libraries.
