In London, a group of daring thieves raids the British Museum and absconds with a powerful artifact that’s believed to grant users the ability to communicate with angelic entities. They deliver the artifact to Julian Bedford, an occultist-turned-CEO who plans to achieve immortality by channeling the object’s power through cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology. Meanwhile in Paris, a Sorbonne student named Aiko is disrupted in the middle of her research on esoteric traditions when several noted scholars suffer sudden, perhaps supernatural attacks. After suffering troubling visions and surviving an attack by vicious, seemingly superhuman assassins, Aiko joins forces with a French detective in an investigation that reveals a secret connection between her family history and Bedford’s quest for power.
VERDICT Simmat’s (Wine: A Graphic History) script is somewhat convoluted, but the plot progresses at a thrilling pace, packing in plenty of action and enough big ideas about transhumanism and black magic to fill several volumes of manga. The real draw here are illustrator Yoshimizu’s (Ryuko) fascinatingly energetic page compositions, detailed architectural drawings, and skill at conveying movement through physical space.
