Still America's Sweetheart and stunning at age 96, Doris Day has throughout her astonishing career politely yet fiercely guarded her privacy. Beyond yearly radio interviews on her birthday (April 3) and rare appearances mostly to support her myriad animal fundraising causes, sightings of Day since retirement rival Bigfoot's. Though technically this program still resembles a 1991 television broadcast documentary, it contains rare interviews with Day and many of her friends and coworkers. Most today would not recognize the likes of film critic Molly Haskell, producer Ross Hunter, writer John Updike, or the hugely popular Les Brown, with whose band Day first sang. Only the ageless Betty White would probably be familiar to today's viewers. Still, the photographs and film clips are pristine and well represent Day's amazing career as recording, film, and television star. Bonus materials include a full-length interview on The Merv Griffin Show from 1976, movie trailers, and a full episode from her popular TV series.
VERDICT Doris Day is reason enough to take this Sentimental Journey.
