As if for the greatest school assembly ever, the latest from Sikoryak (
Terms and Conditions) presents a who’s who of American comics enlisted to enact the U.S. Constitution in period costumes on a one-page tableaux. Sikoryak has made an art form out of adapting the quotidian into comics form, most notably Apple’s Terms of Service agreement. Here he applies his technique to the original text of our country’s founding document, casting characters drawn from all areas of popular culture, and in the style of their signature artist, adapts them for the historical time period. Think Captain America in a tri-corn hat or the Thing in a powdered wig. The effects and juxtapositions enliven the legalistic prose in exciting ways, compelling keen-of-eye readers to identify the sources of Sikoryak’s homage. Helpful back matter includes a list of every character and artist referenced, notes on Constitutional Amendments, and a chronology of the Constitution.
VERDICT This creative and playful tribute makes reading the Constitution a more engaging experience. Of interest to those tasked with explaining government and civic concepts to younger audiences and, tangentially, to those interested in the history of comics.
