Award-winning professional quilter Haworth delivers an excellent introduction to collage quilting with this title. Her method of using small dots of glue, instead of the usual fusible backing, allows quilters to get straight to creating without as much preparation. The book includes simple line sketches for quick and easy projects that can embellish already-purchased clothing and bags. It also gives detailed instructions for turning personal photographs into large-scale quilts. The section on choosing fabrics is quite thorough; Haworth suggests using textured fabrics for elements such as animal fur, incorporating a wide range of vivid, bright colors and muted hues, and giving a collage an extra pop by choosing an unusual print. The book notes that cottons are commonly used, but other textiles, from burlap to silk, also work. Haworth makes great use of her phone camera; her black-and-white shots show color gradation and give another view of the work at hand. The illustrations are both illuminating and inspirational.
VERDICT A great choice for beginning collage artists or readers who wish to take the craft to another level.
