Academic Library Services for Graduate Students: Supporting Future Academics and Professionals

Possessing complex and specific research needs, graduate students benefit from customized library programs. Coeditors Forbes (associate dean for students and scholar svcs., Univ. of Denver Libs.) and Keeran (arts and humanities librarian, Univ. of Denver Libs.) follow their previously coedited Successful Campus Outreach for Graduate Programs with another book on services to enhance the academic experience of graduate students. Fifteen case studies are organized into four sections that focus on library resources and services, professional development for students, skills that students will need after graduation, and the reconfiguration of the library space. The book provides details on research skill workshops in various disciplines offered at Eastern Illinois University and one-credit research skills courses offered at Virginia Tech. The chapter “Empowering Graduate Students as Distance Learners” is timely as more campuses embrace distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Forbes and Keeran recommend that libraries collaborate with graduate student organizations, teaching faculty, and student services.
