The Hit

Scribe. (Leone Scamarcio, Bk. 3). Aug. 2019. 320p. ISBN 9781947534643. pap. $16. M
Det. Leone Scamarcio doesn’t understand why he’s called in to investigate a hit-and-run until his boss explains that the wife and son of a prominent television executive, Micky Proietti, were kidnapped during the incident. A fake ambulance, even a fake witness, were involved. Proietti isn’t very cooperative, and he’s drinking heavily. It seems a lot of people might have wanted to make Proietti sweat, including his brother-in-law. But it’s Proietti’s debt to the Mafia that makes Leone sweat. Despite his own principles, he owes a debt to a boss who was once a lieutenant in the Calabrian mob. Now, the only way to find answers, and to save himself, is to head to Calabria to ask questions of elderly men who once owed allegiance to Leone’s dead father, a godfather of the mob.
VERDICT Scamarcio is an intriguing character in the third intricately plotted police procedural, following The American. It’s an atmospheric, complex case involving the world of television production, Rome, and the Mafia. Fans of the international crime novels of Donna Leon or Jeffrey Siger will appreciate the setting and dramatic story.
