When the fire in the Sun God’s cathedral is lit, everyone in Endwever knows that a woman must be chosen from their village to become the next Star Mother, who will give birth to a Star. Ceris Wenden volunteers for the task, even though she knows that the birth of a Star will kill her, as it has every Star Mother in the past. But things don’t quite go as expected: Ceris survives the birth. Not even the Sun himself knows what to make of it. After her Star goes to join the rest in the sky, Ceris asks the Sun to return her to Endwever. When she arrives home, it’s 700 years after she left; her family and friends and everyone she knows are gone. Desperate to find her descendants so that she might learn what happened to her family, Ceris flees to a larger city. On the way, she encounters Ristriel, a godling running away from his own captors. The two try to escape their pursuers together, unable to rely on anyone but each other. In this stunning example of amazing worldbuilding, Holmberg (Spellbreaker) features incredible creatures, a love story, and twists no one could see coming.
VERDICT This beautiful novel will be enjoyed by fantasy and romance readers alike, but might find its most suitable home on the SF/Fantasy shelf.
