Anna Snow is a lucky woman. Although abandoned at age six, the orphanage where she grows up is well run; she is happy and has made lifelong friends during her time there. After accepting a teaching position at the orphanage, with paid room and board, Anna considers herself fortunate, indeed. So when she belatedly discovers that she is an heiress, Anna realizes there are many degrees of luck, and she wonders if what she has wished for all her life—to know why she was left and who she belongs to—will be worth all that she must give up in order to achieve happiness. Narrator Rosalyn Landor delivers Balogh's words in a competent voice but not with much enthusiasm. Nearly every character seems to be on the verge of a yawn.
VERDICT Only die-hard Balogh fans will find this one on par with other first books in a new series. ["A stunning romance…intriguing premise, [and] well-designed plot…get Balogh's latest series off to a magnificent start": LJ 10/15/16 review of the Signet pb.]
