Each of the five Library Packs in this collection (Summer, Spring, Winter, Autumn, and Patriotic) consist of one DVD containing four to six categories and a set of flashcards and activity cards that can be used together or separately as conversation starters. Activity cards suggest topics, while pictorial flash cards provide visual conversation starters. The DVDs (running from 91 to 106 minutes from the menu), with their continuous, soothing background music, work equally well as springboards for topic-specific discussions and continuous slide shows. Sturdy cards (activity and flash) crafted from thick, glossy, double-sided paper share the DVDs' clear, bright, true colors; excellent contrast; and large, in-focus photos. Items are boxed separately in their own plastic case before being stored together inside a larger container; most libraries will need to repackage for standard media shelving. Libraries using a hanging bag system or intershelving nonprint with print materials could handle the packaging as is. Libraries can purchase the materials without the larger shell.
VERDICT Excellent memory prodders and conversation starters, these items provide flexible, professional resources for those working with dementia and memory-impaired patients. They will be of interest to elder-care facilities, activity directors, and those supporting home caregivers. [Additional collections—e.g., Farms, Cats, Dogs, Signs—are available on the producer's website.—Ed.]
