Carter Hall is the archaeologist alter-ego of Hawkman, a longtime DC hero with countless lives throughout space and time. Hawkman has wings made from Nth metal that allow him to fly, and a metal mace he uses to knock out his foes. His convoluted history is put to good use by Venditti (Green Lantern) and Hitch (The Authority) in this volume collecting Issues 1–6 of an ongoing series in which Hall is forced to revisit Hawkman’s pasts to learn about his ultimate purpose: to defeat the Deathbringers. As Hall interacts with his previous selves, including Khufu Maat Kha-Tar, an Egyptian pharaoh, and a policeman on the planet Thanagar called Katar, at each encounter, Hawkman discovers a hidden relic that allows him to further his quest for knowledge. The final issues have Hawkman and friend the Atom in the Microverse locating a spaceship Hawkman abandoned a lifetime ago.
VERDICT Fans of Venditti’s previous work, the DC Universe, and reboots of favorite superheroes will find this new Hawkman on an exciting journey to understand his past.
