Davies (Something Wild) creates a tempest in her newest topical thriller. An extreme storm system called an "ARK Storm" (for Atmospheric River 1000) is a major climatological threat that periodically menaces California. Meteorologist Dr. Gwen Boudain's research is in designing a method that can predict and control this weather system. Her work has proven fruitful, and now her boss intends to profit from the potential storm not only by selling her research to a hostile country but also by developing a process that induces and magnifies the storm into one of torrential downpours—a rainstorm that would lead to massive flooding with accompanying loss of life and property. A breakneck pace heightens the imminence of the catastrophic event as Gwen and Dan Jacobsen, a reporter and former Navy SEAL, race to find the identity and intentions of the buyer.
VERDICT The science Davies presents seems plausible and relevant, and the protagonists are intelligent and likable. Readers who enjoy a science thriller along the lines of books by Michael Crichton or James Rollins will snatch this one up.
