Tolstoy's classic 1877 novel about the titular Russian aristocrat who sacrifices everything for her love of the boldly handsome Count Vronsky has seen numerous film adaptations (including performances by Greta Garbo, Vivien Leigh, and Keira Knightley); been turned into television movies and miniseries; and has even been made into an opera and a ballet. This award-winning, sensually charged take on the novel originated as a British miniseries in 2000 before airing on PBS. Production values are outstanding, with both lushly filmed settings and impeccably rendered costumes helping to bring the story to life. Helen McCrory gives a mesmerizing performance as Anna, and the rest of the cast (with Kevin McKidd as Vronsky) are equally on point as the story leisurely unfolds to its tragic conclusion.
VERDICT Fans of the book and viewers who enjoy weepy costume dramas will revel in the well-wrought pathos of this smartly executed presentation.
