Listeners who live for compelling novels of psychological suspense will enjoy this dark thriller about a con artist who gets caught up in the deception of her life. Fifteen-year-old Jo is an orphan on the run from the man who killed her mother. Using the skills her mother taught to her to swindle, cheat, and steal, Jo tries to eke out a living in Tent City in Boston. When she stumbles upon a news story of a wealthy girl who disappeared seven years ago at the age of nine, Jo decides to impersonate her. The con seems to be working well—she is seemingly surrounded by love, good food, expensive clothes, and a safe home, all provided by her new adoptive family—but soon Jo begins to suspect that perhaps she herself is the subject of a bigger con. Speaking in the second person as Jo talks directly to her new "sister" Temple, narrator Sandy Rustin portrays Jo with a youthful, approachable voice and the slightest tinge of a Southern accent. Jo is mesmerized by the hypnotizing and capricious Temple, who is depicted appropriately by Rustin with a more sinister, demanding voice. As ominous family secrets get revealed, the narrator adeptly handles the building suspense, faster pace, and Jo's increasing confusion.
VERDICT Give this to your fans of YA crossover mysteries such as E. Lockhart's Genuine Fraud and We Were Liars.
