Week ending January 12, 2018

Meader, Kate. Undone by You. Pocket Star. (Chicago Rebels, Bk. 3). Mar. 2018. 184p. ebk. ISBN 9781501182907. $2.99. CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

Cade “Alamo” Burnett, a professional hockey player from Texas, holds a part of himself in a separate box that he only takes out on special occasions: he is gay. As a star on the Chicago Rebels team, Cade plays for newly named general manager Dante Moretti, the first openly gay managing executive in the National Hockey League. When Cade and Dante see each other at a members-only gay club on Chicago’s North Side, tension builds. Their professional relationship is challenged as their romantic interest grows. Cade decides being a closeted gay man is too exhausting and it’s time for him to come out to his family and fans. A subplot involves the three sisters who own the Rebels organization, as many preconceptions about hockey ownership and management are “smashed to smithereens.” Librarian and USA Today best-selling author Meader (Irresistible You; So over You) is a writer not to be overlooked.

Verdict An intense, sexy romance balanced with a message about presumptions. [Previewed in Joyce Sparrow’s “Love Is All Around,” LJ 10/15/17.]—Joyce Sparrow, Kenneth City, FL

Rhone, Nika. Finding Forever. Wild Rose. (Boulder Bodyguards, Bk. 2). 2017. 396p. ebk. ISBN 9781509217595. $5.99. CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

This second title in Rhone’s “Boulder Bodyguards” series focuses on Amelia Westlake, who has been pressured into a marriage with an up-and-coming political power. Amelia’s father is a Senator and so is her fiancé’s father. When she discovers her fiancé is untrustworthy and considers her an unimportant part of his life, she gives back his ring and disappears. Bodyguard Daryl Raintree (introduced in What the Lady Wants) is assigned to spirit her away from all of the relatives. He takes her to his folks’ farm, where their close contact leads them into viewing each other with new eyes.

Verdict Rhone continues to write characters about which readers care. The sex is hot, and the dialog is solid. Perhaps the extent to which the two sets of parents go might be a little far-fetched, but you will never look at politicians the same way again (or maybe you will). Highly recommended.—Susan Hayes, formerly with Chattahoochee Valley Libs., Columbus, GA

St. George, Harper & Tara Wyatt. No Contest. Pocket Star. (Blood & Glory, Bk. 3). Jan. 2018. 372p. ebk. ISBN 9781501170218. $4.99. CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

Leandro Oliveira, the sexy MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter with the World Fighting Championship (WFC) League can only be described as a public relations nightmare. His model looks don’t make up for his privileged, hot-headed, and self-centered behavior. Leandro’s recent scandals are an embarrassment to upper management, and he is given an ultimatum to clean up his act. Up-and-coming publicist Ashlynn Fields is offered an opportunity to turn Leandro’s bad boy image around, and if successful, a permanent position with the WFC could be hers. Ashlynn is unprepared when Leandro turns his amorous attentions on her and she feels the same undeniable attraction.

Verdict Fans of the first two titles in the series (Dirty Boxing; Take Down) will want to read the latest installment. Recommended for collections where the series is popular.—Nicole J. Suarez, Frankfort P.L. Dist., IL
