Burnt out and discouraged after a series of professional disappointments, a young man named Vern returns home to Florida to live with his mother and grandmother. Vern’s hoping for time to relax and regroup, but his grandmother has other plans—she sets him up with a job as a custodian at her former place of employment, a scientific research facility called Quasar. Quasar’s specialty had been space exploration, back when Vern’s grandmother worked there; now they’re attempting to master interdimensional travel. Vern learns firsthand how much progress they’ve made when he accidentally revives a failed experiment that transports him to the edge of the multiverse. There, Vern encounters a mysterious entity who charges him with undertaking a quest across the multiverse, with the ultimate fate of humanity at stake. As he travels between alternate Earths ruled by highly evolved alligators, dominated by artificial intelligence, and beyond, Vern discovers how even the most seemingly insignificant being in the multiverse bears responsibility for ensuring the greater good of all mankind.
VERDICT Waiters’s impressive debut is a fast-paced science-fiction odyssey that explores morality, ethics, and personal responsibility with humor and loads of charm.
