DEBUT Yuki is Hiro Tonazzi’s Smart Girl, an android that acts as a servant, bodyguard, and back-up system. But Yuki’s programming has been glitching lately, and Hiro is annoyed enough to get a new Smart Girl—a better, prettier model. Feeling betrayed, Yuki begins fighting against her own programming to serve; she runs away, leaving Hiro without any of his private data and necessary files. What follows is Yuki’s attempt to survive in a world that isn’t kind to androids. In this futuristic graphic novel, the line between humans and androids is blurred. Featuring highly detailed black-and-white illustrations, debut author Dagnino’s graphic novel is beautifully done, but the story can feel a little overwhelming or confusing. Readers will have to pay close attention to follow the twists and turns; casual readers may be left lost or uninterested.
VERDICT Purchase where science fiction and futuristic graphic novels are popular.
