The latest in a trend of mocktail recipe books geared towards pregnant people, Bovis’s (Drinking with My Dog) volume is perhaps the most comprehensive and detailed guide for parents-to-be who want to enjoy a cocktail without the alcohol. Filled with dreamy photographs and detailed recipes, this well-organized volume focuses on drinks made with fresh ingredients, including fresh-squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, herbs, and homemade syrups and shrubs, with the added bonus of most drinks being low in sugar. The recipes, which fit all sorts of flavor profiles and have wide appeal, also include helpful notes on glassware. Some drinks are intended to be direct substitutes for their alcoholic counterparts, such as mock wine cocktails and sangria, but others are special for this book’s target readers, such as the Folate Fizz. While these recipes would be perfect for anyone who enjoys mocktails, pregnant or not, names like “Milfshake” and “Baby on Board” may be a deterrent to non-pregnant readers. Overall, this book will appeal to expecting parents who already enjoy cocktails.
VERDICT A perfect gift for parents-to-be and good for libraries with robust mixology collections.
