Yates, whom readers might know from her appearances on BBC’s
Beechgrove, spent a decade working in South Africa in the corporate world before returning home to buy an 18th-century house in the Scottish Borders. Faced with burnout and a sense of losing herself, she took years to settle onto the land and into her house. Over time, she became a gardener. The first part of the book details the creation of her garden. The second part flows through a gardening year. Along the way, she explains seed sowing, curing, creating a cold store, and planting a winter cutting garden. Mixed with the advice on how to grow plants and flowers and care for the land, the book offers a few seasonal recipes from the fruits of her labors, such as cauliflower soup and tomato chutney. The abundant photos are a delight.
VERDICT Reading much like a memoir, this gardening guide is simply lovely. It should appeal to those who hope to make a garden, those who share Yates’s love of gardening, and those hoping to find a bit of beauty and calm joy in a reading experience.
