Combine Pandora’s Box with the videocassette from The Ring and you get this book. When you receive the box, you have three days to hand it off to your worst enemy or it kills you and it goes to the person you love most. It’s been tied to the most horrific events in history. Secret Service agents are given one year to work what has been dubbed the Fear Case—any longer than that and the case consumes their careers and minds. Agents Winters and Mitchum are three weeks away from handing it off, but the solution is tantalizingly close. Winters and Mitchum follow a trail of mutilated corpses, pursued by an occult gang, toward a John Carpenter–esque conclusion.
VERDICT Kindt (Mind MGMT) amps up the cursed object concept, taking a police procedural approach to horror and centering the relationship between Winters and Mitchum. Tyler and Hilary Jenkins’s art is unsettling, presenting both eerie, dreamlike imagery and macabre depictions of death. Overall, this is a satisfying one-shot evoking a nihilistic worldview.
