Breaking the 10

When his wife and son are killed by a drunk driver, David loses his faith in a just God and decides to see if a Great Father in the Sky exists at all—and how better to flush Him out of hiding than to break all of the Ten Commandments? Will God then visit His wrath upon the rebel. Expressing interest in David's experiment and whether he will go so far as to commit murder are two bystanders: the sanctimonious Mr. White (stencil of wings on his jacket) and the irreverent, humanistic Mr. Black (pointed teeth and bow tie). Wilson (The Story of Lee, among others) cleverly tweaks clichés here, but David's intent doesn't synchronize with that of Black or White, and it's too soon to tell if the outcome will seem too pat or develop in a unique, nuanced fashion. The well-drawn, realistic manga-style art from Morikawa (Musashi) resembles somewhat that of Takeshi Obata's illustrations in the "Death Note" series.
VERDICT Regardless of the conclusion forthcoming in Volume 2, David's conundrum is sure to stir empathy and discussion among readers, older teens and up, who are interested in ethics and their whys and wherefores.
