Basics with Babish: Recipes for Screwing Up, Trying Again, and Hitting It Out of the Park

Simon Element. Oct. 2023. 464p. ISBN 9781982167530. $40. COOKING

A companion to the popular web series Basics with Babish, this is the third cookbook from author Rea, a.k.a. Babish, after the best-selling Binging with Babish. Fans of the web series will recognize his trademark pop culture references. Whether readers find this volume useful likely depends on what they want to get out of a cookbook with “basics” in the name. While it does include recipes for stock and chicken quesadillas that are an easier entry point for those starting out, true beginners in the kitchen will likely not feel that whole branzino with grilled lemons or oxtail birria tacos are particularly basic or accessible. However, readers looking to expand their kitchen skills and explore a wider variety of foods will find this book helpful. The notes included with each recipe about what can go wrong and how to address those issues will be particularly appreciated.
VERDICT Fans of the Babish Culinary Universe, a YouTube channel that currently boasts 10 million subscribers, will enjoy this latest addition, although it may not be basic enough for true beginners.
