Benjamin’s latest work was derived from observations and writings completed during the COVID-19 lockdowns; specifically, the time she spent contemplating the domesticity of women and the role of home. While this is technically a stand-alone book, the author has written it as a companion piece to two earlier works: 2018’s Insomnia and 2016’s The Middle Pause, which focus on the changes and losses women face with age. The recurring theme throughout each installment is the minutiae of the everyday lives of women, rooted in the labor of caring for others. This book separates itself from the others in its specific concentration on the domestic work of women.
VERDICT Especially well-suited for women seeking validation regarding the daily labors of love, or those seeking another source of political writing about the division of labor following Eve Rodsky’s Fair Play. Ideal for libraries that house Benjamin’s first two installments, as well as those where titles regarding women’s rights and injustices are needed.
