Navy veteran/communications consultant Dewar (board of directors, Chimp Haven) and former National Geographic Fellow/global education consultant Gorton have written a fun, engaging guide to kid-friendly hikes through Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Readers will find 50 hikes organized by closest city, length (in miles), level of difficulty, and highlights such as waterfalls, covered bridges, birds, and more. The routes are displayed by special features (wetlands, geology, overlooks, beach fun). Each hike includes a destination or point of interest. The book does an excellent job of giving readers tips on how best to prepare for the hikes. It also discusses first aid kits, includes safety reminders, and advises families on packing for the hikes and adventure. Each hike’s individual page features a wealth of information, including a map, summary, the length, elevation, hike time, best season to visit, directions, a Google Maps link, restroom information, fees (if any), a treat location nearby (such as ice cream or lunch), and a scavenger hunt.
VERDICT A wonderful addition to the series that features everything families need for fun, safe, and educational hikes in the Midwest.
