This short work that grew from Mitchell's (
Cloud Atlas) experimental short story "The Right Sort" is a companion piece to his
The Bone Clocks. Every nine years starting in 1979, on the last Saturday in October, someone comes to visit Slade House and disappears. The work spans five decades and relates the experiences of people who encounter the house and its owners, yet it is not really a novel but rather a few short stories with different and distinct voices that occur at different time periods, all connected by the location. There are surprises, but at times the story is confusing and some situations are difficult to believe. Thomas Judd and Tania Rodrigues provide a soothing and warm narration, adding to the scary haunted house atmosphere of this creepy title.
VERDICT Mitchell fans and those who love quirky fantasy horror stories will enjoy. ["This unsettling supernatural tale is deliciously inventive and hard to put down": LJ 9/1/15 review of the Random hc.]
