When an eight-year-old girl named Kathy Stone suddenly reappears after being abducted over a year earlier, her family rejoices. Kathy is so deeply traumatized by the experience that she cannot speak and is terrified by loud noises, afraid of most people, and able to feel safe only with her mother. Local child therapist Robin Hart tries to help the girl through play therapy, during which Kathy begins to act out horrible murders involving a specific number of people, with a clown doll as the murderer. A mysterious woman is also involved in her game. Robin realizes that Kathy is showing her real unsolved murders as well as some that have perhaps not yet happened. Narrator Marcella Cox portrays the characters in a calm, steady way that somehow ratchets up the already intense tension. Listeners will relate to the main character, Robin, and be as shocked as she is by the twists and turns Omer (
Spider’s Web) doles out.
VERDICT Highly recommended for listeners who enjoy mysteries and thrillers, with a doozy of a twist at the end.
