Choices Women’s Medical Center CEO/founder and journalist Hoffman (
Intimate Wars: The Life and Times of the Woman Who Brought Abortion from the Back Alley to the Boardroom) reflects on the state of the abortion movement in the U.S. after the Dobbs decision. In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case to let individual states decide abortion restrictions. Hoffman believes that pro-choice activists missed opportunities for decades to advocate for women’s access to abortion. She uses her extensive experience in pro-choice activism to analyze the anti-choice activists’ rhetoric and motivations. She illustrates her points using her experience as a health care provider and pioneer in patient-centered care. Her book offers her reflections on the state of activism in the abortion access sphere and speculates on the reasons why abortion has not yet sparked a strong activist movement on par with other newer but bigger movements.
VERDICT A timely look at the state of the pro-choice activist movement. Recommended for readers interested in abortion access and activism.
