OverDrive yesterday unveiled a downloadable Windows Phone version of its OverDrive Media Console app, the latest of several mobile apps that let library patrons check out OverDrive ebooks and audiobooks wirelessly.

Previous versions had been released for BlackBerry mobile devices in April, and for Android devices, iPhones, and iPod Touches last December. An optimized iPad version was released in February. With this latest app, OverDrive now covers the four most popular smartphone platforms in the U.S. market.

The Windows Phone app, like previous mobile apps, supports only EPUB ebook and MP3 audiobook formats. It can be installed on devices running the Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system.

OverDrive supplies more than 500,000 electronic titles to 15,000 public, school, and corporate libraries.

What about Nook/Nook Color?

The Nook is an Android device. Although I have not tried it, I would think it might work with the Android app.

Overdrive works with Nooks already. This article focuses only on OverDrive expanding their smartphone platforms, not their eReader platforms.

To clarify, Overdrive downloads can be transferred to the Nook/Nook Color via USB-to-PC connection. What I am hoping for is a Nook Color app that supports over-the-air (i.e. wireless) downloading, mirroring the functionality of the iOS/Android apps.
