Mashed Libraries Event a Success

November 30, 2008 On Thanksgiving Day, when those of us Stateside were, uh, stuffing our faces, a different sort of gathering was taking place in London. Called Mashed Library, the event was sponsored by UKOLN and led by Owen Stephens. The idea was to get a bunch of people together and see what could be done with library APIs.

The day began with a few presentations, then became a free-form work period. Owen describes how he thinks the day went. A number of others have as well, plus don't miss the video.

As someone who recently helped put on and manage a similar event, I can relate to how Owen must feel at having what seems by all accounts to have been a useful day. As Paul Walk said:
I thoroughly enjoyed the day - kudos to Owen for getting the right balance of people, subjects and activities. There was a ‘buzz’ generated as the day went on which was excellent. I have been to a fair number of ‘hacker’ events where the emphasis is on the tools and the running code - I generally enjoy this kind of thing. But mashlib08 was different - what was really good about this day was that the enthusiasm came from doing stuff with information, more than from the actual development.
Owen also mentioned the possiblity of doing something like this again soon. I think that's a (s)mashing idea.
