Twitter Is the New RSSAugust 31, 2009 After going a full six weeks without reading my blog aggregator, I have to wonder what's up. What's up, I can tell you, is that if it isn't hot with my Twitter peeps, I may not see it. Now I'm the first to admit that this is simply weird. I mean, Twitter is not supposed to take the place of RSS, but in my little corner of the universe it has.And right -- this is also very bad behavior for a librarian, since we are supposed to suck up information as if it were the very air we breathe, but I can't help it. I only have so much attention to give to the flow, and right now my flow is coming across in TweetDeck. Just sayin'. I think one reason is that Twitter serves as a secondary filter. People blog about a lot of things, but if a blog post is good, people will tweet or retweet it. This way, if I missed the initial announcement I'll still likely see it come through from someone else. If it comes from someone other than the author it seems even more likely to be worth my time, if the topic also sounds interesting. So if you want me to see your blog posts, get me to follow you on Twitter, or get it out there on Twitter where others I may be following will retweet it. But more importantly, say something worthwhile, and well. As always, that is the single best advice for getting the attention we all crave so much. Write well, about things that matter, and we'll all find you somehow, somewhere, someday. Posted by Roy Tennant on August 31, 2009 | Comments (8) Industries: News & Features

In response to: Twitter Is the New RSS Alain Pierrot commented: Still, it's useful to have a conservative RSS view: Twitter search engine is of no avail. If you want to explore a topic more than a few days old, you'd better manage automatic storage with another tool.

In response to: Twitter Is the New RSS Roy Tennant commented: Woah, people, chill! I'm just observing my own behavior over the last six months or so, and what I've observed is that I have increasingly relied on Twitter to alert me to things, including blog postings. If I must state the obvious, "Your Mileage May Vary". Another obvious thing to point is that I'm blogging, so I certainly don't think blogging is dead. As Alain points out, blogging and Twitter are complementary.

In response to: Twitter Is the New RSS DrWeb commented: You're seeing the movement for early alerting, but I see the RSS as longer term, more stability. After that vacation for a week, can you review Twitter like you can RSS or Reader results?

In response to: Twitter Is the New RSS Roy Tennant commented: DrWeb, right, like I believe I said above Twitter and blogging (RSS) are complimentary. As for who I'm following you can see that at twitter.com/rtennant/following -- just don't read too much into it. I'm less systematic in my following than I perhaps should be.
